The official hotel partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games is Holiday Inn. There are hundreds of Holiday Inn's across the capital, meaning there will almost certainly be vacancies even at short notice for dates during the Games. It is however worth noting that the three Holiday Inn hotels closest to the Olympic site have substantially increased their rates through July and August:

The following Holiday Inn hotels are within a maximum 20 minutes journey time to the Olympic Stadium. Prices are examples of the best available at time of writing for dates between 26th July and 13th August.
A less expensive alternative is to find a B+B within the local area. Most local, independently run hotels have not increased their prices for the Olympics. There are a number of hotels within easy walking distance of the Olympic Stadium, some with prices as low as £40 per night. However, with these hotels, early booking is completely essential - some are already fully booked for the entire month surrounding the Olympics.

Alternatively, many property owners close to the site are renting rooms in their homes for an unbeatable price. Many of the listed properties will be empty and will function in exactly the same way as self-catered villa or chalet accommodation. Many of the properties available are spacious, luxurious flats, but at a fraction of the price of a similar hotel. On the Agents websites all details are listed, including prices, photograhs, distance from the Olympic Stadium and limitations such as pets, children, smoking etc. This system is a potentially ideal solution for students and young people. Again, early booking is essential and deposits usually apply.
The Athlete's Village is an exciting all new build on the site of the Olympics. Just a stones throw from the Stadium, all athletes will be in easy walking distance for the duration of their stay in London. The residential flats to house 23,000 athletes and officials has been built from scratch on the site of a disused rail yard. Several months of demolition and decontamination of the area have readied it for the flats that now stand on the site.
Each of the spacious, airy flats has all mod-cons and WiFi. They are also wheelchair accessible via brand new lifts, ahead of the Paralympics. Surrounding the area will be spacious green areas, tree lined streets and numerous shops. Interestingly, the entire site (the Athlete's Olympic Village and the Stadium itself), will be run from an exclusive power plant close to the site. Piping for water supply had to be specially dug in during the build.
After the Olympics, the flats will be converted into 2,818 new homes.
East London has become a diverse and exciting place over the past few years. Within walking distance from the Olympic Stadium is the huge green expanse of Victoria Park - with beautiful tree-lines walkways, children's play-parks, nature ponds and tennis courts.
A short distance down the road find the trendy Shoreditch, which is filled with fantastic restaurants, cool clubs, great shopping and a wonderful independent cinema. Visit Brick Lane for a world-famous quality curry before heading to the Games, or stop by Spitalfields for a drink. These areas are all walking distance from Bethnal Green and Liverpool Street Stations and about ten minutes by bus from the Stadium. Head down to Stratford for a spot of shopping at the brand new Westfields shopping complex.
Wherever you choose to stay, the borough of Tower Hamlets has a lot to offer (including the Tower of London). It might be a good idea to book for a few days extra around the Olympic events dates and get a taste for the area during your stay. Once again, ALWAYS book ahead of time as accommodation is already becoming fully booked within the area. Looking slightly further afield in East London (areas such as Bow, Limehouse and Lewisham) will provide the lower prices and possibly greater availability. As is most often the case in any capital city like London, hotels closer to the centre tend to cost more.
